同年7月30日夜、東京都三鷹市の自宅で療養中に、看病していた長女に「死ぬよ」と告げ、みずから点滴の管を抜き、次いで首の静脈に埋め込まれたカテーテルポートも引き抜き、数時間後の7月31日午前2時38分に逝去、79歳没。
